Tri-cams can be placed in either the extended mode like a standard nut, or flipped over in a camming configuration for parallel cracks. The smaller sizes are particularly useful for supplementing nuts and cams. Tri-cams are good on alpine routes because they can be placed in cracks of all shapes and sizes and don't weigh too much.
