The latest in Patagonia's base layer thinking, Regulator, like Light- and Midweight Capiliene®, makes use of fabric engineering to move moisture. The inside of the fabric looks like a gridwork of fleecy squares (which it is), with smoother fabric between them. That smoother stuff is actually the outer face of the fabric, so when moisture gets pulled into the squares, it then moves directly into the smoother areas - which have more surface area - and is dispersed all along the outside of the garment. One of the greatest advantages to this "Mechanical wicking action"is that it works with any moisture. If you wear your R.5 top in the rain, the rain drops hit and immediately spread out on the outside, because there's more surface area there. So, while the R.5 is a fine super cold weather base layer, it's even better on its own for cool, wet weather play. It'salso ideal under a paddle jacket for whitewater.
